About us
We’ve been part of Salisbury’s rich choral tradition for over 100 years
Salisbury Musical Society is a mixed choir of about 130 voices who live in Salisbury and surrounding areas in Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. We perform major classical choral works in public concerts that are normally given in Salisbury Cathedral, three times a year, accompanied by a full orchestra.
Our history
Salisbury Musical Society was founded in 1923 by Sir Walter Alcock. During the last hundred years our conductors have included Dr Richard Seal as well as Sir David Willcox. We have also enjoyed singing with fine professional soloists including Janet Baker, Ian Partridge and Robert Tear.
Who’s who
David Halls has been our conductor since 1993; he is also the Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral. He has toured Europe and the USA with the cathedral choirs and has appeared as conductor, accompanist and soloist in many concerts and recordings.
Salisbury Musical Society has a very active committee made up of individuals who are devoted to choral singing and who work to create a happy environment and dynamic singing experience for all our members.
Working with other choirs
Singing with other choirs can enable us to sing the biggest works, or to position smaller choirs around the cathedral to alter the texture of the sound. Above all it enables our members to share their enjoyment of the work with other musicians.
